Itinerary Highlights

Wednesday, May 1st - Evening departure aboard your overnight service to London.


Thursday, May 2nd - Arrive at London Heathrow Airport where you will be met and transferred to our city-center hotel. After time to unpack and rest up from the overnight flight, there will be an orientation meeting to introduce you to the tour and the neighborhood of your hotel. This evening we’ll gather for drinks before a welcome dinner at the hotel. Overnight: London

Friday, May 3rd - Today we will visit the Dr. Williams Library for a presentation on the history of religious dissent in the United Kingdom. After a break for lunch, we’ll have a tour of the British Museum. This evening, we’ll attend the theatre together. Overnight: London

Saturday, May 4th - The day begins with a sightseeing tour of London designed to give newcomers an overview of this great city and reacquaint returning travelers with its many charms. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free to make your own plans--visit the Tower of London and see the Crown Jewels, or take a stroll through the Tate Modern. Overnight: London

Sunday, May 5th - This morning we attend the service at the Newington Green Unitarian Church in London, where Mary Wollstonecraft was a member. Following the service there will be time to mingle with the congregation and have lunch in a local cafe. Leaving London, we visit Blenheim Palace, before continuing to Oxford where we will stay for the next two nights. Overnight: Oxford

Monday, May 6th - This morning we explore the beautiful city of Oxford, including Oxford University and Christchurch. The afternoon and evening are free. Overnight: Oxford

Tuesday, May 7th - Leaving Oxford this morning, we’ll continue our journey north, heading into the Midlands. We’ll stop first to visit the neoclassical mansion at Tatton Park. From here we drive into the center of Knutsford. After time for lunch in the town, this afternoon we’ll visit the Quarry Bank Mill at Styal, a living museum showing every aspect of the life of mill workers during the heyday of the industrial revolution. Dinner is included at our hotel this evening. Overnight: Knutsford

Wednesday, May 8th - Turning east today, we head for the Peak District National Park, an area of supreme natural beauty surrounded by the industrial midlands of England. We’ll first visit the “plague village” of Eyam before arriving at Chatsworth House, “The Palace of the Peaks.” We’ll begin with a tour of the house and then have free time to have lunch and to stroll around the gardens. It is a very short distance through the park to the village of Great Hucklow, where we will visit the Old Unitarian Chapel and stop in at the Nightingale Centre before returning to Knutsford for dinner. Overnight: Knutsford

Thursday, May 9th - We begin the day with a drive further north to the City of York, arriving in time to check in to our hotel and enjoy a presentation on British Unitarianism. There will be free time for lunch before we gather again for a walking tour of the old city, including a tour of magnificent York Minster. Dinner is included this evening at the hotel. Overnight: York

Friday, May 10th - This morning it’s a short journey to Castle Howard, immediately recognizable from the BBC television series, Brideshead Revisited. You’ll have time to lunch on your own in one of the estate’s three restaurants before we return to York for a final free afternoon and evening. Overnight: York

Saturday, May 11th - We drive south this morning, back to London. After checking in to our hotel, the rest of the afternoon is free for individual exploration. We’ll meet up at the hotel again this evening to attend another theatre performance. Overnight: London

Sunday, May 12th - This morning our coach will pick us up at the hotel at a reasonable hour to take us to Hampstead, a leafy suburb of London, north of the city center. We’ll attend a service at the Rosslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel and then have free time to meet the local congregation and to have lunch. On our return to central London the rest of the day is free until we gather for our farewell dinner. Overnight: London

Monday, May 13th - Morning transfers to Heathrow Airport for returning flights to the US.
